At Alfreton Nursery School, we believe that childhood should be filled with awe, wonder, curiosity and joy. A Curriculum Built Around Children 

Our curriculum is carefully designed around children's development, interests and future success. Through high-quality interactions, purposeful play and rich first-hand experiences, children develop the knowledge, skills and vocabulary they need to make sense of the world around them. We place particular emphasis on communication and language because we recognise that language is the foundation of learning. Children are immersed in a language-rich environment where stories, conversations, songs and meaningful interactions help them develop their understanding, thinking and confidence as communicators. Alongside this, we provide opportunities for children to develop physically, creatively, mathematically and socially through experiences that inspire curiosity and deep engagement. 

Learning Through Exploration 

We believe children learn most effectively when they are actively involved in their own learning. Our curriculum encourages children to investigate, experiment, question and discover. Through carefully planned environments and responsive teaching, we support children to think critically, solve problems, make connections and develop independence. We want children to be active participants in their learning, developing the confidence to explore new ideas and learn from both success and challenge. 

Our extensive outdoor environments, including our Forest School provision and STEAM Hive, provide rich opportunities for children to learn through exploration, movement and discovery. We believe that the natural world inspires curiosity, creativity and wellbeing. Outdoor learning helps children develop resilience, confidence, physical skills and a deeper understanding of the world around them. Children are encouraged to take managed risks, solve problems and develop independence through meaningful experiences in all seasons. 

Inclusion for Every Child 

Inclusion is central to our identity as a nursery school. We celebrate diversity and recognise that every child learns differently. We are committed to ensuring that all children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, feel valued, respected and able to participate fully in nursery life. By understanding children's individual strengths and barriers to learning, we adapt our provision to help every child succeed. We work closely with families and external professionals to ensure children receive the support they need at the earliest opportunity.

Parents and carers are children's first and most important educators. We value strong partnerships with families and recognise the vital role that parents and carers play in children's development. By working together, sharing information and supporting one another, we create the best possible outcomes for children. We strive to build a genuine sense of community where children and families feel welcomed, supported and valued. 

Preparing Children for Life 

Our ambition extends beyond nursery. Alongside developing early knowledge and skills, we want children to develop the characteristics, attitudes and dispositions that will support them throughout their lives. We nurture confidence, independence, perseverance, kindness, curiosity and a love of learning.
